MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced Wednesday it is now accepting applications for Wisconsin Urban Forestry Catastrophic Storm grants.

The DNR said the program funds tree repair, removal, or replacement within urban areas, following a catastrophic storm event for which the governor has declared a state of emergency. Grants will range from $4,000 to $5,000, and do not require a dollar-for-dollar match.

The DNR said it will make 20% of its unallocated annual funds available to aid eligible applicants, including Wisconsin municipalities, counties, tribal governments, and 501(c)(3) organizations.

In order to receive a grant, the DNR said applicants must have been damaged by snow, ice, hail, wind, or tornado. Urban forests that have been damaged by insect infestation, forest fire, drought, or flooding are ineligible.

Applicants are due Aug. 27 by 11:59 p.m.
