There were rumblings that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was dealing with a mysterious injury, and he was pictured in a walking boot earlier this week.
It turns out that Prescott has a mild foot sprain, and with training camp right around the corner, it has been cause for concern for some Cowboys fans.
However, former NFL linebacker Ryan Shazier does not seem all that worried.
Shazier noted that he himself had undergone maintenance work on his body during offseasons throughout his NFL career, so he doesn’t seem to think Prescott’s injury is that big of an issue.
Of course, given the circumstances surrounding Prescott, the injury is being magnified.
Dak Prescott is still looking for a new deal
Prescott is preparing to enter the final year of his contract and is apparently seeking a deal that will pay him in the neighborhood of $60 million annually, so the microscope is on him heading into 2024.
As a result, any little nick or bruise to Prescott will probably garner unnecessary attention.
This is a perfect example.
Of course, seeing a team’s starting quarterback in a walking boot right before training camp could seem alarming, but it appears that Prescott’s injury is nothing to fret over.
Prescott is coming off of a brilliant 2023 campaign in which he led the NFL with 36 passing touchdowns and finished second in MVP voting.
However, Prescott once again fell short in the playoffs, as the Cowboys suffered a devastating Wild Card Round loss to the Green Bay Packers.
That run Prescott’s career postseason record to 2-5, which is the ammunition some are using to cement their point that the signal-caller is not worthy of a massive deal from Dallas.
That being said, the Cowboys’ lack of playoff success is certainly not all Prescott’s fault. We are talking about a franchise that has not made it past the Divisional Round since January 1996, and Dallas has collected a grand total of just four postseason wins since then.
It hasn’t mattered who has been under center for the Cowboys for the better part of the last three decades.
Plus, the market is the market, and Trevor Lawrence just landed a five-year, $275 million extension with the Jacksonville Jaguars, tying him with Joe Burrow as the highest-paid player in football ($55 million per year).
While Dak Prescott may not be better than Burrow, he has almost certainly done enough to make as much as Lawrence, and when it comes to the NFL, the highest-paid player at a particular position is often the next one.
