A 69-year-old man from South Kitsap was killed after he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle on Thursday.

The man was hit by the passenger side of a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old girl around 10:50 a.m. on SW Lake Flora near the intersection with Hidden Acres Place/Pilgrim Firs, just east of the entrance to the Pilgrim Firs Camp and Conference Center, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office. The man, identified as Greg Haugen by the Kitsap County Medical Examiner, was declared dead at the scene when Sheriff’s deputies and South Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews arrived.

Haugen died of blunt force trauma, said Jeff Wallace of the medical examiner's office, and the manner of death was classified as an accident.

The driver told deputies that she saw the man riding on a dirt portion of the road, according to the Sheriff’s Office. A statement from KCSO said the driver told deputies she was focused on the upcoming intersection when she “felt an impact.”

The 17-year-old was not taken into police custody, said Sheriff's office spokesman Kevin McCarty. She showed not signs of impairment when speaking with law enforcement, McCarty said.

The collision remains under investigation. Officials do not know if speed was a factor, McCarty said. A Google Maps search shows speed limit signs of 50 miles per hour in the area.
