MONROE TWP. — Two people sustained critical injuries Thursday night when their boat crashed into the seawall of the Bolles Harbor channel.

The incident happened at about 11:30 p.m. near channel marker No. 10, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough reported. Central Dispatch received several 911 calls of a boat sinking near the entrance to Bolles Harbor with people in the water. Deputies and fire and rescue personnel arrived at the scene and found a 62-year-old Monroe man and his 38-year-old son clinging to the rocks near the Hoffman Memorial Fishing Pier. They were pulled from the water by rescue personnel and transported to Mercy St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo for treatment of critical injuries.

The preliminary investigation showed that the men were operating a 1983, 26-foot Chris-Craft boat, Goodnough said in a news release. For unknown reasons, the boat crashed into the seawall near channel marker No. 10 while attempting to enter the harbor. The hull of the boat was ruptured, and the boat partially sank in the channel.

Speed and alcohol are factors in the crash, Goodnough said.

Personnel from the Monroe Township and LaSalle Township fire departments and Monroe Community Ambulance assisted at the scene. South Shore Towing also assisted in removing the boat from the water.

The crash remains under investigation by Deputies Jordyn Panza, Sam Pitzen and Justin Jackson.
