Man charged in Route 33 crash that killed 3 members of family; was impaired by marijuana, police say

A truck driver consumed marijuana before a 2022 crash on Route 33 that killed three members of a Monroe County family, according to police.

Pennsylvania State Police have charged with Nelson Segura, 34, who is listed as having addresses in Oak Ridge and Lodi, New Jersey, with three felony counts of homicide by vehicle related to the crash that killed a couple and their teenage daughter.

Authorities said Alexis Robinson, 39, of Blakeslee was driving with her husband, Darrell Robinson, 42, in the front seat, and their daughter, Tahlia Robinson, 16, in the rear when the crash occurred about 1:25 a.m. March 24, 2022, in the northbound lanes of Route 33 in Bushkill Township. The three were pronounced dead on scene.

Troopers found the front end of a 2007 semi-truck, driven by Segura, in the backseat area of the Robinsons’ vehicle, according to court documents.

Segura told police shortly after the crash he was driving north on Route 33 and came upon the Robinsons’ vehicle stopped on the highway and did not have time to stop. He hit the brakes and the truck slid, according to court documents.

Police wrote that they observed Segura’s eyes were bloodshot, and that he was “displaying nervous behavior in regard to a criminal investigation with this crash.”

Troopers given consent to search the vehicle found tobacco removed from a blunt cigar shell, and following the execution of a search warrant discovered a cigar within the cab of the truck that tested positive for THC, according to court records. THC is the compound that gives marijuana its high.

A police drug recognition expert evaluated Segura and determined “he believed Segura was impaired,” according to court records. A blood test several hours after the crash turned up evidence of THC in Segura’s system, according to police.

Segura was arraigned Wednesday before District Judge Alicia Rose Zito of Bangor on three counts of homicide by vehicle. He also was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, careless driving, driving without insurance and restrictions on alcoholic beverages.

He was released on $250,000 unsecured bail, according to court records.
