UPDATE: The two suspects, Amber Sperbeck and Michael Craig, were arraigned Friday, July 5 in the 56A District Court, “for their involvement with the theft of mail from dozens of locations in Delta Township.” For each of them, bond is set at $50,000 cash or surety.

They are each charged with 39 counts of mail theft (as a second offense for Sperbeck) and one count of improper possession of an absentee ballot, said Eaton County Prosecuting Attorney Douglas R. Lloyd.

They each have a scheduled probable cause conference at 10 a.m. July 15, and a preliminary exam at 3:30 p.m. July 22.

“Reports of mail theft have increased recently, and sadly have become rather common,” said Lloyd. “These thefts lead to further fraud and theft from our citizens, often without the victims realizing that they have been victimized.”

Lloyd said “the keen observations of a citizen of Delta Township” had helped lead to the arrests and charges.

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Independence Day is generally not one of the days when the mailman comes around, but Eaton County deputies managed to bust someone this July 4 with more than 1,000 pieces of mail in their vehicle.

    Allegedly stolen mail, that is.

Deputies from Eaton County’s Delta Patrol unit took a larceny of mail complaint in the early hours of Thursday morning, July 4, said sheriff’s officials.

Shortly after, deputies tracked down a car that matched the given description. They ultimately found the 1,000+ pieces of mail in the car.

Deputies arrested and lodged the two suspects.

    The investigation is ongoing.

Officials said the sheriff’s office will reach out to people whose mail has been stolen.
