The 33rd annual Cobb County Sheriff’s Low Country Shrimp Boilin’ returns to Jim Miller Park and Event Center on Monday.
From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., attendees can indulge in a low-country seafood boil, barbecue, hamburgers, hot dogs, cole slaw, ice cream, fresh fruit and, of course, plenty of corn.
The tradition began in the 1990s as a corn boilin’, hosted by then-Sheriff Bill Hutson and continued with his successor, then-Sheriff Neil Warren. In 2022, Sheriff Craig Owens added his own twist, changing it from a corn boilin’ to a shrimp boilin’.
During the gathering, there will be live entertainment from DJ Philly Phil and Kayte Burgess and the All-Star band, with Chelsey McNeil, 11Alive News meteorologist, as the MC. The family-friendly event will also have inflatables, face painting and other activities for children.
According to Owens’ campaign consultant Fred Hicks, at least 260 people have bought tickets as of Friday. Hicks said elected officials from the state level and down were invited and many are expected to attend.
“I am excited to bring the Cobb County community together under one roof. In the age of hyper-partisanship and polarization, I see this as an opportunity to show Georgia and the country that there is more that unites us than separates us, including good food,” Owens said. “We are united under the banner of public safety and I look forward to standing and eating as one community.”
According to previous MDJ coverage, last year’s event welcomed more than 900 people, packing the park’s event center to the rafters. During that event, Owens made news by announcing his re-election kickoff.
Hicks hopes the event will be a way for Cobb residents to interact with the sheriff without it feeling like a campaign event.
“There’ll be plenty of time for that in the fall when we’re knocking on doors or phone banking and texting,” Hicks said.
This year’s event is paid for by the Friends of Craig Owens. Tickets are on sale for $35 and children 12 years old and younger are free. Proceeds will go toward the campaign to re-elect Sheriff Craig Owens. Owens is being challenged in the November election by Republican David Cavender, a sergeant in both the Army Reserves and Cobb Police Department.
