In their collegiate days, JJ Redick revealed that Carmelo Anthony had animosity towards him. It happened during the Jordan Brand All-Star Game in 2002, when Melo didn't want Redick to win two straight MVPs in a row, so he hijacked JJ's shot attempts and made the game about himself.

"I was once frozen out of an All-Star game. Not an NBA All-Star, though. By Carmelo Anthony, at least that's what was told to me," Redick revealed on 'The JJ Redick Podcast. ' "What was told to me by two different guys was that Melo was going around telling people 'JJ's not going to get the MVP again, I'm taking every shot.' And if you look at the box score, he took like twenty-six shots that game; I think I took like seven. And he didn't get the MVP because we lost."

The 2002 Jordan Brand All-Star Game

The game happened a week after the All-McDonalds game, in which Redick nabbed the MVP after scoring 25 points. So it makes sense why Melo didn't want JJ to get the MVP award again, as multiple NBA scouts were in attendance observing these young players.

In fact, Redick admitted that he still doesn't know if he deserved the All-McDonalds game MVP because it felt like he was just given to him for being the highest scorer on a more stacked team that won by more than 20 points.

So when the Jordan Brand All-Star Game happened the following week, and Melo and JJ were teammates once again, the 10-time NBA All-Star made sure to attempt 16 field goals and 12 free throws, resulting in 27 points, while Redick shot the ball only eight times, resulting in 7 points.

However, Anthony didn't win the MVP because, as Redick said, their team badly lost 167-121. Amar'e Stoudamire and Sean May took home the MVP award as co-winners.

A perfect foresight of how they turned out as players

How Melo and JJ handled the 2002 Jordan Brand All-Star Game perfectly depicted how they became professional players. Redick, despite having a remarkable career at Duke University, was satisfied with being a role player who would make the most of the shots he was entitled to get.

Carmelo was the type of egoistic superstar who wanted the limelight and to be the centerpiece of the team. Both became successful professional players who made a name for themselves in the NBA.
