While technically today is not a holiday, many people have taken advantage of the calendar and created a four day holiday weekend for themselves. Today is day 2 and we have another steamy day in the Northeast & Mid Atlantic states. High humidity, sunshine, hot temperatures and the risk for some scattered thunderstorms pretty much describe a typical July day. Highs will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s with cooler readings at the shore.

One man died and three people were injured after a severe thunderstorm pummeled Russell County in Kansas, Sheriff Andrew Van Der Wege said in a news statement.The storm blew through Lake Wilson in rural central Kansas' Wilson State Park bringing high winds of 68 to 70 miles per hour, the sheriff said, toppling multiple campers. The sheriff's office said dispatch received multiple 911 calls starting at 11:52 p.m. on Wednesday, and officers arrived at the scene to find several campers turned over.Officers found three injured people during search and rescue efforts and one dead man. Christopher Montoya, 64, of Holyrood was found in the Hell Creek Park area of the state park. His body was transferred to the local mortuary. An autopsy is scheduled, the sheriff said. The injured people were taken to Russell Regional Hospital. Details about their condition weren't released. The sheriff's office warned visitors to be cautious if they decided to come to Lake Wilson due to debris and power loss. Severe storms and flooding have hit the Midwest in recent weeks.This is a breaking news story. Beryl remains a tropical storm with winds of 60 mph as it churns in the Gulf of Mexico as of Saturday morning, but it is expected to strengthen before hitting Texas on Sunday with potential Category 1 strength. The land interaction from Beryl’s time over the Yucatan Peninsula did a number on the storm, weakening it from a hurricane to a disorganized tropical storm during the day Friday. On Saturday, Beryl may take some time to recover, but is forecast to begin strengthening by the end of the day. The storm is moving into favorable conditions for hurricanes, with warm water and limited wind shear. The track from the National Hurricane Center takes Beryl towards the Texas coast by late Sunday night into early Monday, likely as a strong Category 1 Hurricane. Currently, the most likely landfall location is around Matagorda Island, just east of Corpus Christi, but that will likely need to be adjusted as the storm’s track becomes more "fine-tuned" in the next day or so.

After quick waves of energy have been popping into the northern U.S. through the week, a more potent trough is expected to dive in from Canada on Saturday and Sunday. A developing trough of low pressure on the Lee side of the Rockies will interact with moisture from return flow from the Gulf of Mexico. With high temperatures remaining in place, and relatively cooler air coming in from the north, the atmosphere will be unstable, creating strong thunderstorm updrafts. The more significant threat in the slight risk area (Level 2 out of 5) is for hail 2" in diameter or greater highlighted in yellow through Nebraska and northwest Kansas.
