    Deadline extended for Arkansans to apply for FEMA disaster assistance for those impacted by May storms

    FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — FEMA has extended the deadline for disaster assistance for Arkansans affected by the Memorial Day storms that moved through the northern parts of the state, according to a news release.

    The department said on Friday the deadline has been extended to August 28 for residents in Baxter, Benton, Boone, Fulton, Greene, Madison, Marion and Randolph counties.

    “At the request of the State of Arkansas, homeowners and renters who suffered damage to their property from the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding from May 24-27 have additional time to apply for federal disaster assistance,” FEMA said in the release.

    Here’s what the assistance coverage includes:

    • Rental assistance
    • Temporary housing
    • Home repairs
    • Personal property losses
    • Other disaster-related needs not covered by insurance

    FEMA also announced on Friday it will also offer assistance for funeral costs related to the Memorial Day storms.

    The department said the expenses eligible may include the costs of:

    • Transfer of remains
    • Casket or urn
    • Funeral services
    • Death certificates
    • Burial plot
    • Cremation
    • Interment
    • Cost of reinterment if disinterment is caused by the disaster, and/or occurs in a family cemetery on private property
