DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to be wary of possible scams after a rise in recent reports.

The Sheriff’s Office has received a new wave of reports recently, of scammers impersonating MCSO employees.

What to do if EBT/SNAP fraud happens to you

In most instances, the scam caller told residents that they have outstanding warrants. The resident is urged to transfer money via a Bitcoin wallet or else they will be arrested immediately.

“As a friendly reminder, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will never call you demanding payment to avoid arrest.” said MCSO in a social media post .

This is a common scam that fluctuates throughout the community. Scammers will oftentimes impersonate law enforcement or local officials and use fear tactics to scam residents out of money.

The Sheriff’s Office says scammers may even use the actual names of deputies, command staff and other personnel.

Residents are urged to never share personal information over the phone. If a phone call seems suspicious, call your local law enforcement agency to report the incident.
