The suspect arrested for a fatal stabbing on the Atlanta BeltLine Northeast Trail on Friday evening is an escaped inmate wanted by the Georgia Department of Corrections.

William Coleman, 27, was charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife during a felony, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

The identity of the victim has not been released yet nor has a motive in the attack. Atlanta BeltLine Inc. said Saturday that the victim was a homeless man.

APD units responded to a person stabbed call at 8 p.m. on July 5 at 243 Montgomery Ferry Road NE. The victim was found with multiple stab wounds on the BeltLine near Ansley Mall and pronounced dead at the scene.

While canvassing the area, officers observed a subject matching the description of Coleman.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution , Coleman was an inmate at the Atlanta Transitional Center on Ponce De Leon Avenue, where he had been incarcerated since October 2021 on charges of simple battery, robbery, and obstruction of law enforcement.
