The College Football Playoff is expanding to 12 teams for the first time this season. This format was introduced to college football in 2014 and has been a big part of it ever since.

On a recent episode of Late Kick Live , Josh Pate discussed how he believes the 12-team playoff could eventually affect the coaching carousel.

With the playoff now having 12 spots for teams to compete for, Pate questioned if not making the playoff could be more detrimental to head coaches. With the bar to make the playoff lower, there could not be much more room for excuses.

"...Now that there are 12 spots, it's not the case that everyone makes it, but it feels like a bunch of folks make the playoff now," Pate said. "So all of a sudden, if you don't make the playoff this year, do you talk about your coach differently?"

The last season with the four-team format saw a playoff field consisting of the Michigan Wolverines, Texas Longhorns, Washington Huskies, and Alabama Crimson Tide. The Michigan Wolverines took home the title after beating the Washington Huskies.

Head coaches may start looking over their shoulders after missing the playoff in the future if what Pate wondered about happens.
