Canadian pianist Paul Tobey was on a fast track in 2004, with his debut release on Arkadia Records garnering a Juno Award nomination (the Canadian Grammy) and an eight-record deal with the label. Enter tendonitis, and severe inflation in his forearms that pushed a promising career way back on the back burner. After a two-decade hiatus, Tobey slides that career back up to the front of the stove in 2024, with It's Time, a solo set of (mostly) familiar covers.

If one wanted to capture a 'who's who' snapshot of the jazz icons of the mid-'70s, into the '80s and beyond, one of the best ways to start was to see if they had added their name to the list of artists who recorded and/or released a 'Live at Sweet Basil' collection. The New York City club debuted as a restaurant in 1974 and, within a few years, artists including Art Blakey, Gil Evans, Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner, Mal Waldron and others began performing at the compact venue, and had recorded sessions there. One of the first to hit the 'record' button was bassist Ron Carter. Carter recorded this session in 1990 along with three other jazz giants: Art Farmer on both trumpet and flugelhorn, Cedar Walton on piano and Billy Higgins on drums. Carter, Walton and Higgins even returned for yet another recorded session in 1991 (without Farmer that time around.)

Tom Fowler, the bassist best known for playing with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention as well as Ray Charles, died this week at the age of 73. Engineer and producer Dennis Moody confirmed the loss in a Facebook post, noting that Fowler died on July 2 from complications of an aneurysm he suffered the previous week.
