    One person killed in crash on South Carolina road, Highway Patrol says

    One person was killed Saturday night in a motorcycle crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol .

    The single-vehicle collision happened at about 10:05 p.m. in Orangeburg County, said Lance Cpl. Nick Pye.

    The rider of a 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle was driving south on U.S. 301 , according to Pye. Near the intersection with Short Avenue in Orangeburg, the motorcycle ran off the left side of the road and crashed into a fence, Pye said.

    The motorcycle rider died, according to Pye.

    The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the rider.

    No other injuries were reported.

    There was no word if the rider was wearing a helmet.

    Information about what caused the motorcycle to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

    Through June 30, at least 456 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

    At least 18 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 36 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
