'Leather' was Cody Johnsons' third major label studio record. Released in November of 2023, the 12-song album quickly filled country radio. Cody's song 'The Painter' immediately became a fan favorite before the rare find, 'Dirt Cheap' was uncovered and called a 'hidden gem of the record.' Recently, Johnson began to tease that a deluxe version of the hit album is in the works. As we all anticipate more announcements, there is not an official release date set yet.
After a few weeks of clues, Cody came and out and announced that an additional 12 songs will be released this fall. Talking to Pure Country , back in March, he said, “There’s a deluxe edition coming next year with 12 more tracks. This body of work is a little bit unique in the fact that I wanted to give the listener, give the fan a little bit of time to get to know these songs.”
As he announced that 'Leather' still had more to come, he also hinted at a few collaborations. He did say he planned to hit the studio with country icon, Terri Clark and has also teased other duets with stars like Carrie Underwood. He has gained recognition for his memorable renditions of well-known tracks like 'Travelin' Soldier,' as well as through his Cowboy Sessions project. Fans are now speculating whether these next 12 songs will feature collaborations with other musicians or include more covers of beloved classics.
The country music star himself has said that the original 'Leather' album and all of the songs have been special to him all along. In an interview with Billboard , Johnson talked about his hit song 'The Painter,' and how he wrote it about his wife, Brandi.
He said, “I think it's the first song I've ever recorded where I sing it in my talking voice. I intentionally tried to stay out of the way of the song, so the listener could paint their own image, and have their own interpretation of it. But for me, obvisouly it is about my wife. Without her, my world wouldn't be what it is. We've been together for 15 years, so we've had some real highs, had some real lows. We've been through a lot together. She has stuck with me through thick and thin, and I think she deserves for me to be able to say this song is for her."
Cody Johnson is still on the original 'Leather' tour which will wrap up in the middle of August. He has set records with sold out crowds and thrilling reviews all tour long. Fans are expecting that when the tour concludes, the deluxe version of the album will be out soon after.
As for the future of country music, it is safe with Cody Johnson at the forefront. With relatable lyrics, and a gentle old style country sound, he has quickly become one of country musics biggest sensations.
