An Atlantic County animal rescue needs help after a Galloway Township animal cruelty investigation led to three dozen dogs and cats with various issues.

Nancy Santos, 57, was arrested last week after Human Law Enforcement officers found 29 cats and seven dogs living in inhumane conditions, the charges claim.

Officers also found a dead kitten on the living room floor and three others on a laundry machine, according to the affidavit of probable cause previously obtained by BreakingAC.

Inside a freezer in Santos’ Cresson Avenue home, police found two dead dogs and a dead cat.

Santos was released from jail after the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office declined to make a motion to detain her. But she cannot have the animals at this time.

The dogs and cats were taken to Kimmy’s Safe Haven Rescue in Egg Harbor City, where they are being treated and readied for fostering with possible future adoption.

Most have some form of injury, including sores, eye infections, malnutrition and other health issues, a representative of Kimmy’s told BreakingAC.

All the animals have seen the veterinarian, received medicated baths and grooming, and additional medical treatment.

Kimmy’s has paid for everything.

The rescue is in need of donations to cover treatment, medications and follow-up veterinary visits until the animals are healthy, according to the representative.

The home was "covered in animal feces and urine" and looked like it "had not been cleaned for a long duration of time," the affidavit of probable cause states.

Santos technically still owns the animals, but has allowed for them to be temporarily fostered, the representative said.

Santos either has to sign away her rights or a judge could order them surrendered.

It was not clear whether the state would move to have Santos reimburse medical costs as was done in a Cumberland County dogfighting case where one defendant refused to surrender ownership .

The rescue does have other dogs ready for adoption.

Mary Bear

She is described as super friendly. She is great with all people, including kids. She is learning leash skills.

She should not go to a home with cats, and is very particular with other dogs, but has lived with others in the past.

A meet and greet is recommended. Wth professional training and proper introduction, she could very well adapt to another dog. She's young and extremely trainable.

Baby

Baby is a 12-year-old senior.

He is good with other calm dogs. Because he is fragile, he cannot handle a rambunctious pup. Cats should not be an issue.

He should have a calm child-free home due to his age. His cherry eye is not an issue, it just looks strange but common with the breed.

Baby is looking for a nice quiet forever home to live out his remaining years.

Nugget

"I love Nugget," says one volunteer.

He is described as "so happy-go-lucky, affectionate and very bouncy!"

He loves scratches behind his ears. He is good with cats, dogs and loves people. He is learning to walk nicely on a leash.

He's extremely trainable and eager to learn with some treats.
