Evacuation warnings lifted as crews continue to battle French Fire burning in Mariposa County

Containment of the French Fire increased Sunday as crews continue to battle the wildfire burring in Mariposa County.

According to the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office, all evacuation warnings and mandatory evacuations have been lifted in all residential areas.

The wildfire started at about 6:33 p.m. Thursday in the area of French Camp Road at Highway 49 in Mariposa.

The sheriff’s office said all roadways have been opened and motorists are advised to drive slowly inside burn areas or where fire crews or repair crews are present.

As of Sunday afternoon, the fire has burned 908 acres and is 55% contained. Cal Fire said the blaze has destroyed a total of four structures and four injuries have been confirmed.

Fire officials said there was minimal fire growth and activity Saturday night and into Sunday. Fire crews are continuing to mop up hot spots and reinforce containment lines. The areas of Stockton Creek Reservoir and TrailRoad to Mariposa County High School remain closed, according to Cal Fire.

A total of 1,139 personnel have been assigned to the French Fire. According to Cal Fire, 97 engines, 32 crews, 20 water tenders, 16 dozers and four helicopters are among the resources assigned to fight the blaze.

A Red Cross evacuation center has been established at the New Life Christian Churchat 5089 Cole Road.
