Another year down at TPC Deere Run , another first-time winner in the books. That is what happened Sunday afternoon at the site of the 2024 John Deere Classic. Davis Thompson fired off another impressive round to cap his week, finishing with a closing 63 and a total 28-under par to earn his first PGA Tour victory .

Thompson is the 24th player to do so at the John Deere, which is a modern tournament record dating back to 1970. Although PGA Tour University graduate Michael Thorbjornsen made it interesting in the late afternoon, firing off six consecutive birdies, it was not enough to rattle Thompson, who had firm control of the lead.

Right Place at the Right Time

The win did more for Thompson than line his pockets. With his victory, Thompson is now in the field for The Open Championship, the final major of the season in two weeks. The victory came in Thompson's 63rd career tour start and broke the previous tournament scoring record held by Michael Kim in 2018 by one stroke.

Not to be overshadowed were the impressive performances from the young guns. Both Michael Thorbjornsen and amateur Luke Clanton tied with C.T. Pan for second at 24-under par. Clanton was playing on a sponsorship exemption, and Thorbjornsen was playing in his third event since gaining his card through PGA Tour University upon completion of his collegiate season.

I love this event. The location, the sponsor, and the people, in general, make it a great little Midwest spot. Even better is the track record that it serves as a launch pad for many professionals in getting their first win on the PGA Tour.

I really hope this event stays where it is. The event embraces the fact they are a launchpad, and the field shows likewise. With the exemptions given, we got a chance to see the next wave of talent coming on the Tour. Now the focus turns to next week's Scottish Open, with a loaded field as a prequel to The Open Championship.
