From France to Norway: 5 Knockout Skirt Trends You’ll See All Over Europe This Summer
By Avalon Afriyie,
The time for wearing skirts is nigh and if there's one reference we can always count on, it's that of European women. When temperatures rise, Brits extend their gaze to European style, and their enviable ensembles. Their preferred skirt styles span printed skirts to maxi-length denim, each one bearing reference to the culture, climate and fashion muses of yesteryear.
European style is aspirational at the best of times but more so in the summer as they're familiar with warmer forecasts and therefore their style bridges the gap between city style and resortwear. From France and Italy to Norway, there are ample timeless skirt trends you're likely to spot on women each summer and voguish styles are incorporated in a way that feels individualistic. We've seen this with the bubble skirt trend; It's been inherited by Scandinavian women foremost, as their signature style leans towards full skirts regardless.

You'll find many styles are cross-referenced, as most European countries share influences, however, it's the styling and small details that make them decidedly French, German, Italian or Scandinavian. Like Italian women, French women favour printed skirts but they do so in silken styles, whereas Italian motifs are bold repeat patterns adorned on cotton. German women appreciate relaxed looks, which encompasses supple, straight-cut denim often paired with trainers, whereas French women are known for donning knee-skimming denim skirts with mules. I've searched the internet for stylish skirt trends worn by our favourite fashion insiders.
Continue reading for five skirt trends adopted by European women and see the ways they're being styled this summer.
1. THE TREND: FULL SKIRTED MAXI
THE LOCATION: NORWAY
Style Notes: Exagareted silhouettes are beloved by Scandinavians, so it's no wonder why they've recently inherited the bubble skirt trend. To emulate their effortless garb, look for natural fabrications with cinched-in waist detailing and a circular perimeter. Although this style may appear prim, the natural fibres result in a relaxed, off-duty look. Take notes from Nnennae and polish off the look with a flat ballet shoe.

2. THE TREND: STRAIGHT-FIT DENIM SKIRT
THE LOCATION: PORTUGAL
Style Notes: The denim skirt trend is well-loved in most European countries but upon further inspection, I've piqued the languid styles donned by Portuguese women and the prevalence of denim skirting. The characteristics of worn-in denim are best attributed to relaxed Portuguese style, especially when paired with trainers!

3. THE TREND: SILK AND SATIN SLIP SKIRT
THE LOCATION: LONDON
Style Notes: Granted, slip skirts have been worn and loved by French women for millennia but we British folk are hot on the tail of timeless and easy-to-wear pieces, especially those less dependent on hot weather. Marilyn demonstrates how to integrate a slip skirt into a formal look and I've seen many sartorialists follow suit with floor-length slip skirts.

4. THE TREND: '90S-STYLE MINI SKIRT
THE LOCATION: FRANCE
Style Notes: French women are no strangers to a skirt trend and mini skirts are among the most popular styles. Ever a dedicated maxi and midi wearer, even I've been converted to increased hemlines since moving to Paris. The mini is aspirational as women wear them year-round, no matter their age. It's become an empowering stance that's worth celebrating!

5. THE TREND: PRINTED SKIRT
THE LOCATION: ITALY
Style Notes: La Dolce Vita is a well-known Italian phrase that encapsulates the Italian way of dressing. Sophisticated, bold and with a hint of 1960s, it exudes glamour. You'll most likely associate the blue and white colour pallete (as seen on Bettina in Milan above) with Italian style but a general rule of thumb is colour, playful prints, full circled skirts and plenty of poplin cotton.
