Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas as a Category 1 storm early Monday and is expected to weaken as it races north across the United States, potentially bringing heavy rain to New Jersey starting Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

While the forecast track for Beryl's remnants remains well west of New Jersey toward the Great Lakes, the storm could still unleash thunderstorms on the Garden State after three days of extreme heat to start the week.

“It won’t be a topical storm or hurricane when it reaches North Jersey, it will just be showers,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Allison Lancia. “These showers are expected Wednesday night into Thursday.”

More thunderstorms could hit the state Friday into Saturday, the weather service said.

Beryl will be considered a remnant low by the time the former hurricane's effects are felt in New Jersey.

The weather service is calling for a 70% chance of thunderstorms Wednesday into Thursday, with northwestern counties more likely to see the heaviest rain.
