Infamous Team USA Killer Went Viral For Epic FIBA Moment With Jose Alvarado

Puerto Rico basketball legend Carlos Arroyo was in tears Sunday after P.R. punched its ticket to the 2024 Olympics.

Older Team USA supporters might remember Arroyo as the spitfire Puerto Rican guard who torched the Americans in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Arroyo dropped 25 points, seven assists and four steals in a massive 92-73 upset, which was Team USA's first Olympics defeat since the program began sending NBA players in 1992.

Puerto Rico hadn't made the Olympics since -- until another diminutive NBA guard led the team back to the tournament exactly two decades later.

New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado was the captain of the ship for Puerto Rico this past week as they to win the Olympic qualifying tournament held in Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan.

In the tournament's championship game, Alvarado poured in 23 points and four 3-pointers to go along with six rebounds and two steals. Alvarado and Arroyo shared a special moment on the sidelines after Puerto Rico sealed the 79-68 win over Lithuania.

Alvarado fittingly feels like the modern-day NBA equivalent of Arroyo. Both guards are fiery competitors who play much bigger than their height.

With Team USA's roster looking completely stacked, it's hard to imagine Alvarado leading another Puerto Rico upset over the United States. But given what happened with Arroyo 20 years ago, you never know.
