Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga advertises itself as a western epic, but if you asked some - if not most - of its viewers, they might instead describe it as a western epic fail . The 69-year-old actor has basically put all of his chips on the table with his latest directorial project, and though
he's emphasized time and time again that he's proud of it, moviegoers are having mixed emotions about chapter one of what's supposed to be a four-part movie event. Costner himself has put forth somewhere around $38 million of his own money to help fund the project, and he hasn't exactly seen a great return on investment. In the movie's first weekend after it premiered on June 28th, the film brought in a measly $11 million at the box office. Considering another one of these movies is already on the way (in theaters August 16th) and the third is reportedly being filmed right now, it's not a promising start for Horizon to say the least. There's only so much "get over yourself and go see it" marketing a movie can do before moviegoers start to turn on the project. Speaking of turning on the movie,
Horizon's first installment got an absolutely scathing review from the media outlet Variety. The writer explained that the western effort from Costner fails even his most diehard Yellowstone fans, and that it's really a win if moviegoers can make it all the way through the film's three-hour runtime. The Variety movie reviewer explained that they themselves "barely made it through" the film, and gave quite possibly the best quote I've ever seen in a movie review. To preface, apparently something that happened in the theater they were in was more entertaining and compelling than what was happening on the big screen: "During the last hour of 'Horizon,' a man sitting several rows behind me descended the steps in the dark theater, spilled his half-full bucket of popcorn midway down, reached to pick it up - but it was interrupted when he let out an audible fart.
At this point, he abandoned the bucket and hustled to the door. If only 'Horizon' matched that level of compact storytelling and wit, featuring a memorable character facing challenging odds." https://twitter.com/aguirreryan/status/1809633185296445608?s=46&t=sK4ZxpXri80bfkXt_M8Cog Just one of the most brutal reviews a movie could get. As you might imagine, that movie review - or at least that quote from it - has gone viral. I personally haven't seen it myself, but if someone that did go to see it thought a man embarrassingly passing gas in the theater was more interesting than the movie itself, Horizon might need to rethink this whole four-part thing.
