NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — While North Dakota is most commonly known for its fields, badlands, and oil wells, the state is also home to a tremendous 4,500 lakes — 413 of which are accessible to the public. In honor of this fact, Governor Doug Burgum has officially proclaimed July as Lakes Appreciation Month in the Peace Garden State.

“North Dakota lakes offer prime boating, fishing, camping, and swimming locations,” stated a press release from the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). “Summer lake festivities and fishing derbies attract in-state and out-of-state recreational enthusiasts.”

Things to do around town: July 8-14

Although most state residents rely on groundwater or river sources for drinking water, about 67,000 North Dakotans depend on lakes as a source. This makes it all the more important to keep the area safe from both diseases and foreign species.

“As you head out to your favorite lake for a fishing trip, a camping weekend, or just a leisurely boat ride,” the release continued, “remember to keep it free from Aquatic Nuisance Species. Thoroughly rinse your watercraft before and after entering any body of water, and remember to “Pack Out what you Pack In” to keep shorelines clean.”

For those seeking to commemorate this month, the DEQ also recommends volunteering at or taking part in activities designed to raise awareness of the lakes — including biking or hiking events, festivals, and cleanup projects. This, they claim, will help keep these beautiful hidden treasures safe for future generations to enjoy.
