COLUMBUS — Sixteen people died in 15 traffic crashes over the holiday weekend, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported Monday.

Statewide, 648 traffic crashes occurred during the holiday reporting period of July 3 through July 7, the patrol said. Failure to wear seat belts was a factor in seven of nine deaths where belts were available, it added.

Troopers also made 438 arrests for impaired driving and 72 for drug-related charges and issued nearly 3,000 safety belt and child safety seat citations.
