FOSTER COUNTY, ND ( KXNET ) — State and local agencies rushed to the scene of a CPKC train derailment in Foster County on Friday, July 5, which resulted in the spilling of multiple toxic materials.

According to a press release from the Department of Environmental Quality, the derailment occurred several miles southeast of Carrington. Of the 29 train cars displaced, several were reported to have been hauling materials such as ammonia, methanol, and plastic pellets. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the incident remains under investigation.

Foster County Emergency Management and CPKX began monitoring air quality immediately after the derailment. As a precaution, area residents were asked to shelter in place yesterday while equipment was relocated and ammonia was released.

“Although Bordulac rail operations resumed at about noon today,” stated Foster County Emergency Manager Andrew Kirking, “roads have been reopened to local traffic only due to ongoing cleanup efforts involving heavy equipment.”

Currently, CPKC continues to collaborate with responders (including the Jamestown Regional Hazmat Team and the ND Department of Emergency Services) at the scene of the derailment and is actively engaged in cleanup operations. The DEQ, meanwhile, is on-site and will continue overseeing both the investigation and remediation efforts.
