Seneca County Commissioner Bill Frankart joined leaders from across the state at an Independence Day rally at Birchard Park, in Fremont, on July 4, during which Seneca County Commissioner Bill Frankart was honored and presented with a poster for service in Sandusky and Seneca counties.

The event, which was organized by Sandusky County Republican Party Chairman Justin Smith, featured speeches by Frankart, state Treasurer Robert Sprague, state Sen. Bill Reineke (R-Tiffin), state Rep. Gary Click (R-Vickery), Sandusky County Commissioner Scott Miller and Republican State Central Committeewoman Susan Platt.

The Seneca and Sandusky County Republican Party organizations frequently work closely. This year's Lincoln Day dinner was held at Frankart's farm in Seneca County.

Someone to know: Put-in-Bay's superstar K-9 Sheriff's Deputy

Ottawa County Sheriff's Office Deputy Gary Allred is stationed at the Put-in-Bay office with his partner, K-9 Storm. One of the smallest sheriff's office locations, I interviewed them a couple of weeks ago, to find out more about the unique needs and qualities of the South Bass Island superstar.

Q: I understand your partner is unique in many ways, some of which make him very popular, especially with the students that live on the South Bass Island.

A: Storm is the superstar on the island. He is a 2-year-old purebred German Shepherd, straight from Germany. He's a dual-purpose K-9. He's trained in tracking, article searches, handler protection and narcotics.

He can also get pretty specific in what he's found, is that right?

He's trained in the odors of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines, and crack cocaine.

The Put-in-Bay Sheriff's Office facility is only about a year-and-half old, but Storm looks young. How long have you two been here?

We were paired up in November, and we started, on-patrol, in January, on the island. Storm is one of four dogs with Ottawa County. We're specifically assigned out here.
