A 19-year-old girl was arrested Monday on suspicion of one count of manslaughter and four counts of aggravated assault after a car crash killed one person and injured four others, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Around 8:30 p.m. Friday, Madison Carey was driving westbound on Pinnacle Peak Road near North 56th Street when her car veered off the road, court documents stated. Carey overcorrected and crossed over into the eastbound lanes, causing a head-on crash with another car, occupied by five people, the documents stated.

Court records said both cars came to a rapid stop, rotated and caught fire. One passenger in the other car died after being taken to the hospital, records stated, and Carey had a broken ankle.

According to court documents, police spoke to three witnesses who said they saw Carey's car swerve into oncoming traffic, resulting in the crash. One witness said the car was swerving before the crash, while another said it had been driving approximately 25 miles per hour in a zone with a 45-mile-per-hour speed limit, documents stated.

Another passenger was critically injured, had his legs paralyzed and has required multiple surgeries, according to court documents. A third passenger required immediate surgery and hospitalization in the intensive care unit, documents stated, while the final two passengers had multiple bone fractures.

According to court records, police found two ID cards in Carey's possession, one with her true legal name and birthdate and the other with a false birthdate showing her to be over 21. At the time of the incident, Carey was 19 years old.

A preliminary breath test on Carey resulted in a reading of 0.146%, court records said. The legal blood alcohol content limit is 0.08%.

According to court documents, Carey admitted to taking a prescribed central nervous system depressant and to using marijuana recreationally.

Carey was booked into a Maricopa County jail on one count of manslaughter and four counts of aggravated assault on Monday.
