(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A local World War II veteran and hero was laid to rest on Tuesday, July 9 three months before his 100th birthday.

Cole Griego was drafted into the Navy in 1943. He served as a Corpsman during the Battle of Iwo Jima where he was under constant enemy fire for 37 days. Cole was at the base of Mount Suribachi, tending to the injured, and watched the soldiers raise the flag. He was awarded with the World War II Victory Medal and the American Area Asiatic-Pacific.

“I have a feeling that what he went through those two years that he was enlisted made him appreciate life so much more because so many of his fellow soldiers had passed away,” said his daughter Renee Tabet. “I think that is what created him to be content with life.”

Griego passed away in June 2024 surrounded by family. On July 9, he was laid to rest at the Pikes Peak National Cemetery. The American Legion and Honor Guard were there to honor Griego.
