PITTSBURG, KS – The St. Mary’s Colgan girls basketball team would host a youth camp on Tuesday afternoon.

55 girls from around the four states would participate in various basketball drills. Held for 14 years, the camp is known to be a tradition at the high school. Head Colgan girls basketball coach Abby Farabi and her players would lead the camp, and many of her players were former campers.

We had the chance to catch up with coach Farabi and some of her athletes on the importance of the camp.

“It’s important that they have interaction with the older kids. The young ones love getting to play basketball with the high schoolers. The older kids are role models to the younger ones, and they get to spend 2 hours with them and learn from the best,” coach Farabi said.

“It’s all really special for me because coach Farabi has taught us a lot, and I want to teach the little kids how much fun basketball can be,” said rising senior Lauren O’Brien.

“A lot of the older kids are great because they help me become a better basketball player both mentally and physically, and it really helps me explore what I can use to apply in practice,” said Shyia, a youth camper.

Activities would take place from 10 a.m. until noon. Coach Farabi would also discuss the importance of the big turnout for the school, saying having wide community support is huge for the program.
