Pinpoint Weather: Hot Wednesday, some storms possible

ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR ) — A hot and muggy Wednesday is expected across Southwest and Central Virginia. Showers and storms are possible as a cold front passes through.

A Heat Advisory will go into effect from noon until 8 p.m. Wednesday for areas east of the Blue Ridge. The heat and high humidity will result in heat index values between 104 to 107. When dealing with hot weather, here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

• If you plan on working or exercising outside, try to do so during the morning or evening when temperatures aren’t as hot
• Take frequent breaks when working outside
• Drink plenty of water
• Stay in the shade when you can
• Consider wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothes

It will be a warm and muggy start to the day with morning temperatures in the 70s. A mix of sun and clouds will be overhead with temperatures rising into the upper 80s and lower/middle 90s by the afternoon. Scattered showers and storms will develop along a cold front during the afternoon and evening. Not everyone will see rain, but some storms may pack a punch. Gusty winds and downpours are possible.

Rain chances will decrease behind the cold front. For Thursday, stray showers and storms cannot be ruled out. Otherwise, partly to mostly sunny skies will be overhead as afternoon temperatures rise into the 80s and lower 90s.

Friday will be slightly “cooler” with more cloud cover overhead. Highs will be in the 80s. Scattered showers and storms are possible. Due to the moist air in place, downpours may occur.
