Sunday afternoon amid the heat of the day, a group of guys put on safety vests, gloves and grabbed trash bags before taking on a task that needed doing.

The group from The Hope for Returning Citizens Program lead by Brandon Waddell this past weekend made their way out to Turner Street and the area around the park to provide some cleanup around the asphalt and sidewalks.

The group are all residents of The Hope Home on Davenport Street, where as returning citizens they are working to get their lives back on track.

The goal of the Sunday afternoon outing? Waddell said it was to set an example for the residents of The Hope Home for what they can do to give back.

“We are showing our men at The Hope Home how to be not only productive members of the community, but also leaders in the community,” Waddell said.

The group were able to collect several bags of trash from the street and sidewalks before they wrapped up for the afternoon.

The Hope for Returning Citizens Program is one of many around the state that partner with the Department of Community Services to provide reentry housing and programs to returning citizens from incarceration.

While taking part in the Re-entry Housing Program through an organization like The Hope for Returning Citizens Program, an individual can receive short-term housing for up to 6 months to stabilize the process and help people remain crime-free.
