The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a phone scam involving someone calling residents impersonating a deputy.

If you receive a call from a number listed as 316-600-3922 and someone says they are Deputy David Wayne, do not answer and talk to the caller, the sheriff’s office said.

“The sheriff’s office does not do business over the phone. Our number is 316-660-3900,” the agency said in a social media post.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office is experiencing a similar situation where a man calls residents impersonating a sheriff’s office member.

The man uses the names of a retired lieutenant and a current patrol captain, undersheriff Daimon Cundiff said.

“He has been successful in getting people to send money in the form of bitcoin by using threats of arrest and has been known to be very aggressive over the phone,” Cundiff said in an email. “ The scammer has been able to spoof our Sheriff’s Office main line of 316-322-4254 so the call may appear to come from our office.”

Like most law enforcement agencies, the BCSO said it does not do business over the phone.

    Other scams in Kansas

Other Kansas law enforcement agencies reported scams occurring in their area.

In late June, the Emporia Police Department received reports of residents getting pop-up alerts on their computers that told them to call a number where the scammer impersonated an EPD officer. The scammer told victims there was a warrant for their arrest and demanded money for the warrant.

In Douglas County , someone called residents in early June claiming to be a district court judge. The scammer told them they needed to pay a fine or be arrested due to missing jury duty.

The county said the court does not seek payment through the phone or have someone arrested for missing jury duty.
