The Owatonna American Legion Post 77 baseball team returned to Chuck Fuller Field for the first time since June 18 on Tuesday night as they faced off against Winona’’s Legion Post 9 team.

Owatonna was coming off of a 5-2 road victory against Stewartville that took place Sunday night, which was their first game after a ten day break in their schedule. They did not fare as well against Winona, as they lost 5-0.

Winona came swinging right off the bat in the first inning, as Carson Jones launched a two-run home run after Winona’s second batter in the lineup reached on a fielding error.

Owatonna had a chance to put up some runs in their half of the first inning, as they had runners on first and second after a single by Mitch Seykora and a walk by Tayte Berg. Jones was the pitcher for Winona and he got out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout.

The second and third innings were scoreless for both teams, but Winona struck again in the fourth with two singles to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt allowed the runners to advance to second and third and a fly out to left field scored a run to make the score 3-0.

Winona scored one run in the fifth and another run in the sixth as well to take a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.

Owatonna’s Tanner Smith was the starting pitcher and pitched into the sixth inning. Tayte Berg came into pitch with two outs in the sixth inning and ended the inning with a groundout after giving up a walk. Berg also pitched the seventh inning and retired the side in order.

Jones for Winona pitched into the sixth and seventh innings, retiring the side in order in both innings, ending Owatonna’s hopes for a comeback. Winona won 5-0, recording ten hits and only giving up three hits to Owatonna’s offense.

Owatonna ends their regular season with five straight home games, with the game against Winona being the first. Owatonna looks to shake-off the loss against Winona in their game at home against Waseca on Thursday night.
