On Tuesday, the Ashland County commissioners accepted a donation of $25,335 for the purchase of dog shelter building cameras and another $860 for the purchase of portable dog live traps.

Both donations came from Homeward Bound.

“There will be 24 cameras, so every corner, every walkway and every pod will have cameras,” said Commissioner Denny Bittle. “That is for the safety of the dogs and the staff there.”

Bittle said the cameras would be in the hallways, the kennels, the office and even outside to aid in observing the daily walks volunteers provide the dogs.

“We can use them to make sure our volunteers are doing things correctly,” he said. “Even when we are feeding or watering, it gives us a safety factor for the staff and the dog. Most of it is safety and security.”

Immediately following the camera discussion, BCU Electric had its estimate for the purchase of the cameras accepted for the $25,335.

“It’s a unique business being in the dog shelter business,” Bittle said. “Lots of different things happen and you never know what the day is going to bring.”

    In other business, commissioners:

    • Approved a resolution to place a five-year, 0.45 mill renewal levy on the Nov. 5 ballot for the Ashland County General Health District.
    • Accepted the resignation of Kelsey Lundell, part-time kennel worker, effective June 15.
    • Authorized Cindy Funk, county auditor, to hire Jackie Hager Co., LPA, as outside legal counsel to assist in matters relating to property tax valuation appeals for Rover Pipeline.

Commissioners will meet 9 a.m. Thursday, July 11, in the Commissioner’s Conference Room on the second floor of the County Office Building. The meetings are open to the public, but also live-streamed on the Ashland County Government Facebook page.
