Germany's 2014 world champion Thomas Müller is retiring from international football, the Bild newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Following Germany's 2-1 extra-time loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 quarter-final on Friday, the Bayern Munich forward, 34, had said he was mulling his Germany future.

Midfielder Toni Kroos quit all football after Germany's exit at their home tournament while goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is also considering whether to carry on playing internationals.

Müller made his Germany debut in March 2010 and has amassed 131 caps, third on the all-time list behind Lothar Matthäus (150) und Miroslav Klose (137).

After the group exit at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Müller was dropped by then coach Joachim Löw in 2019 alongside defenders Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng.

However, he returned for the Euro 2020, in which Germany were eliminated in the last 16 by England.

At Euro 2024 on home soil, Müller played as a substitute in the 5-1 win against Scotland in the opening game and in the defeat to Spain.

Matthäus: A great player leaves the team

Even without an official confirmation from the player, Matthäus already paid tribute to Müller for his great service to the national team.

"A great player is leaving the team," Matthäus said on Magenta TV, where he's a pundit, ahead of the Euro 2024 semi-final between the Netherlands and England.

"I believe that he only wants to concentrate on Bayern Munich. His appearances, his successes, his goals and above all his leadership qualities leave a big footprint," he added.

Bild said the forward would fulfil his contract with Bayern until 2025.

Former Germany and Bayern team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger said: "Thomas has had an amazing career with the national team and it could be that it was his last game (against Spain). But I don't know for sure."
