    Driver injured in Duplin County crash, firefighter shocked by nearby lightning

    DUPLIN COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed a driver was injured in a crash on Interstate 40 in Duplin County Thursday.

    They said the driver’s injuries are serious and he was taken to ECU Health Duplin Hospital. Rose Hill Fire Department Chief Gary Boney said a firefighter was working near a fence close to the scene when lightning struck the fence.

    The firefighter was treated and released from the hospital. Chief Boney said the firefighter is doing well. Chief Boney also said the crash involved a car that went off the road and hit a tree.
