WASHINGTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) – The Washington County, Tennessee Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) issued a warning Thursday after a new scam began circulating in the area.

Letters have been sent to multiple people in the county that appear to be official and are from “The Clerk’s Property Office.” Washington County Sheriff Keith Sexton said there is no such office in the county government.

The sheriff’s office reports that based on information provided by people who received the letters, the scam targets people who bought their homes or land in 2022.

“The letter appears to be a notice asking you to send $89 for a copy of your recorded deed,” Sexton stated in a news release. “It even states in bold letters that it is an ad and that you can [get] the same documents free or at a lesser price from your local County office, but people are falling for it.”

The WCSO stated anyone can get a copy of their deed through the Register of Deeds office in the Historic Courthouse on Main Street in Jonesborough.
