KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — Shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday, the Lenoir County Emergency Communications Center got an Airport Alert request from the NC Global Transpark air traffic control tower for an inbound aircraft.

Lenoir County Emergency Services Director Murry Stroud said a fighter jet, operated by Draken International and based at the GTP, declared an in-flight emergency due to a potential failure with one of the plane’s mechanical systems. The pilot was able to safely land the plane without incident at around 4:15 p.m.

GTP Airport Fire units and crews from the Kinston Department of Fire & Rescue, Lenoir County Emergency Services and Lenoir County Sheriff’s Department responded to the airport as a precaution.
