Pasquotank County is warning of an ongoing scam that involves people impersonating deputies trying to swindle residents of their personal information.

County Manager Sparty Hammett warned residents of the scam in his weekly update to the Board of Commissioners on Friday.

The scam is initiated with a phone call from a con artist who claims to be an investigator with the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer tells the call recipient that they need his or her personal information regarding a court case and that the matter requires urgent attention.

Residents who receive such a call are urged to not give the caller any information. If the caller leaves a voicemail do not respond by calling the number back. The sheriff’s office does not operate a confidential voicemail inbox.

“The Pasquotank Sheriff’s Office will not call or email people to demand money or threaten arrest,” the manager’s announcement states. “If you receive a phone call of this nature, and you’re unsure of its legitimacy, please contact the Pasquotank Sheriff’s Office with the details of the call.”

To report these calls or other non-emergencies, call the Sheriff’s Office at 252-338-2191 or Central Communications at 252-331-1500.
