Every time an animal is adopted from a shelter, an angel gets its wings, or something like that. It's always so heartwarming when you see a dog or cat get a forever home, and there's something so special about it when a pet is adopted by a famous celebrity, because famous celebrities could pretty much buy any dog they wanted and when they adopt instead it's just too wonderful.

That's what recently happened with the legendary actress Annette O'Toole, who announced on Instagram she has added an adorable Terrier Mix to her family, adopted from the South LA Shelter. Just look at this cutie.

O'Toole, probably best known for starring in Nash Bridges and Smallville (as Superman's mama!) captioned the adorable pic with "This is our new family member, Barry. He is an angel. We adopted him from the South LA Shelter. They do incredible work, and made the process SO easy. They neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated him. We think he is a Cairn/West Highland Terrier mix."

O'Toole, who is still drop dead gorgeous at age 72, is married to actor Michael McKean. McKean is best known for playing Lenny Kosnowski in Laverne and Shirley, David St. Hubbins in This is Spinal Tap , some Christopher Guest movies, Saturday Night Live and one of my favorites, as Chuck McGill on Better Call Saul .

O'Toole also shared this sweet snap of Barry with her talented husband.

Barry looks like he is settling into his new home just fine and he's as comfy as can be. I always wonder what dogs think when they go from a noisy, crowded shelter with all sorts of new people and other dogs to such a calm, quiet and loving home! Our friend Barry here has won the doggo lottery!

What To Remember When Adopting a Dog

The 3-3-3 rules is a great guideline.

When you first bring a new dog home from the shelter, it's important to remember the Rule of 3.

The 3-3-3 rule says , "The first three days is their time to decompress and get used to the new environment. After three weeks the dog has learned their new routine and their personality is starting to come out. After three months, your dog knows they are home ."

Some dogs, like little Barry above, seem to adjust perfectly pretty quickly, but other dogs may need a bit more time. Regardless of how your own dog adapts, adopting is such a wonderful thing to do and before you know it, it will feel like your new dog has always bene by your side.

Congrats to O'Toole and her new dog Barry! We can't wait to see what adventures you all get up to!
