Reno County now warns of document scam

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KSNW) — A scam reported in McPherson County on Wednesday has now been reported in Reno County.

Reno County says residents who recently purchased property in the county have received mail from a Florida company calling itself Property Assistance Services. The mail contains a document claiming to be a “Property Assessment Notice.”

It includes a fee of $129.95, asking homeowners to mail it or scan a QR code. The document is not connected to any county appraiser’s office and is not a legitimate bill.

The goal is to convince you to send money for services that you likely already received when you were in the process of purchasing your home. Most of it is public information that can be looked up online for free or obtained from your local county appraiser’s office.

The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office sent out a warning Wednesday about the scam after residents there received the same letter in the mail. The letter received by Reno County residents even includes the same typo with the Florida county of Polk being mentioned instead of Reno County.

If you receive a letter like this, destroy it. You can contact your local county appraiser’s office if you are still uncertain.
