The area around Mount St. Helen's is still a geologically active volcano. There are always risks related to the volcano. Along with those risks, there are going to be lahars or mudflows and other hazards, including collapsed rims of formerly safe hiking areas.

Due to these ongoing risks, scientists closely monitor the area in and around Mount St. Helens to help give early warning of potential hazards. Hiking and access to some areas may be restricted or even closed at times to ensure the safety of hikers.

It's important that visitors follow these safety protocols to ensure their own and the scientists' and park authorities' safety. In spite of the risks, the area still offers a unique opportunity for park visitors to learn more about volcanos and geology.

The Johnston Ridge Observatory offers interpretations of the volcano's history and ongoing research related to the volcano and the activity in and around the area. Plenty of hiking, camping, and other recreational activities are still available in the region as long as visitors follow the safety guidelines and restrictions.

Mount St. Helens has been a focus of ecosystem recovery following volcanic eruptions. As the crater or rim collapses and other eruptions occur, vegetation changes and wildlife habitats change. The collapse of the rim has a profound impact on the geological landscape and the safety of hikers and visitors. It offers a unique opportunity for education, research, and careful management to ensure everyone's safety.
