Police: Robbery suspect ends up in handcuffs – and in hospital
On July 20 at 11:08 p.m., a man entered a store in the 4600 block of Washington Boulevard, collected merchandise and allegedly exited without payment, Arlington police said. An employee confronted the suspect outside the business; during the incident, the suspect struck the employee before fleeing the scene on foot, police said.
A History of Helping: Deming Logging Show Marks 61 Years of Supporting ‘Busted-Up Loggers’
In 1963, a local logger named Leon Van Brocklin was injured in the woods. An injury like this could be devastating, as loggers were often the sole source of income for their families in these times. Seeing the need to help, a group of Van Brocklin’s peers organized a logging show, an exhibition of all the skills these men used in the woods every day. A local farmer donated use of a cow pasture equipped with spar trees, a pond for log rolling, and other materials for events. Charging a small fee of $1 per person, the event raised more than $800 for the injured logger, equivalent to more than $8,200 today.

Man injured in Sunday vehicle collision
A man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Sunday afternoon after a single-vehicle collision near Big Lake. According to the State Patrol, a 30-year-old Mount Vernon man was driving north on Highway 9 near the north end of Big Lake when he lost control of his vehicle, crossed the center line and struck at pole. The vehicle came to rest in a ditch. A 30-year-old Roy man, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was taken to Harborview with serious injuries. The Mount Vernon man was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital, then booked into the Skagit County Community Justice Center. He is being held on investigation of vehicular assault, third-degree driving with a suspended license and felony DUI.

Jury awards former Port of Seattle police chief $24.2M over wrongful firing
A former Port of Seattle police chief fired three years ago following claims of workplace misconduct was awarded $24.2 million in damages by a King County jury. Chief Rod Covey was placed on administrative leave in June 2020 after the Port launched an investigation of Covey. The investigation came after racial discrimination complaints were made by Port police officer Yandle Moss against superior officers, including Covey. Moss eventually sued the Port for failing to provide records of the investigation.
