COOK COUNTY — An inmate is dead after he suffered an apparent medical emergency Friday afternoon, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).

Deputies said shortly before 1 p.m., 32-year-old Ahmed Abed suffered an apparent medical emergency in the Residential Treatment Unit.

Jail staff and medical personnel administered first aid before Abed was taken by the Chicago Fire Department to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 2:30 p.m.

Foster mom accused of killing 10-year-old Northwest Indiana boy by laying on him; warrant issued

The cause and manner of Abed’s death has yet to be determined, pending an autopsy from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The CCSO contacted the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force, who will conduct an independent investigation of the incident.
