Jordan Spieth blasted caddie in awkward Scottish Open moment before being immediately humbled

Jordan Spieth learned the hard way to trust his caddie Michael Greller's sage advice at the Scottish Open two years ago.

Spieth endured another rough week at The Renaissance Club, missing the cut on Friday. But this time, his trip to the east coast of Scotland was not quite as eventful as 2022, when faced a particularly challenging moment on the sixth hole that left him eating crow.

Caught on camera, Spieth was visibly torn over his club choice at the short par three, battling a fierce wind for a hole that was a mere 111 yards away. The idea of executing a high wedge shot in such conditions had him puzzled.

Xander Schauffele had earlier commented on the difficulty of the shot, saying: "A hundred ten yards and you're trying to figure out how to hit a 140-yard shot but not too low or too high because then it will end up in the wrong place."

However, Greller, unfazed, assured Spieth there was nothing to fret about. Doubtful, Spieth questioned his caddie as he stepped away from the ball, asking: "Is this even getting within 10 yards of the green? You think it does?"

Greller responded with a relaxed "Yeah, I still like that," despite Spieth's hesitance. "I mean, if it ends up, you know, 100, that's good." Spieth, albeit reluctantly, went ahead with the shot under Greller's counsel. Yet, as the ball soared, Spieth's reaction suggested regret, turning to Greller to second-guess their chosen strategy.

"I mean, it's just not even remotely close to going 90 yards," Spieth lamented. However, as he finished his critique, the ball landed precisely where he had intended, just five feet from the cup.

"Oh my God, it did," an astonished Spieth exclaimed. He then turned back to Greller and queried, "Didn't it look like it was going 40 yards short?"

Greller didn't respond, simply strolling away toward the green knowing that he would leave Spieth blushing, their trust and bond once again perfectly illustrated.

Greller initially worked with Justin Thomas in 2010, taking a break from his job as a high school math teacher in Seattle, before Spieth requested his services. They quickly won the John Deere Classic together in 2013, making Spieth the first teenager to win a PGA Tour event since 1931.

Greller had only planned to take a year off from teaching to caddie for Spieth but ended up accepting the role permanently. They have been a team ever since, winning three Major titles along the way, with Spieth once again reminded why he should always trust his seasoned caddie Greller.
