LATEST: 2 dead, 1 injured in Hwy. 51 crash

Two people died and a third person was injured Friday in a multi-vehicle crash on Hwy. 51, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash was reported at about 2:30 p.m. near South Blue Lake Road in the town of Hazelhurst. Witnesses say the driver of a northbound vehicle stopped in the lane of traffic to make a turn when the vehicle was struck from behind, pushing it into an oncoming southbound vehicle.

Two people in the northbound vehicle died at the scene. The current condition of the third victim was not immediately available Saturday.

A portion of Hwy. 51 was shut down for more than seven hours Friday as crews cleared the scene and completed crash reconstruction.

No names have been released. The crash remains under investigation.
