Royal watchers, get ready, because Kate Middleton’s Wimbledon attendance is officially a go! Kensington Palace has just confirmed that the Princess of Wales will attend the men’s singles final on Sunday, July 14, 2024.

This is special news for Kate, considering that the Princess of Wales has been keeping a low profile since March 2024 when she shared her cancer diagnosis with the world. Her upcoming Wimbledon appearance will mark only her second public outing since that announcement, following her attendance at Trooping the Colour in June 2024.

For Kate, Wimbledon isn’t just any event—it’s a cherished tradition. As the Patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, she’s been a familiar face at the tournament for years. In previous years, she’s often attended both the Women’s and Men’s Singles finals. However, this year is different. It’s been confirmed that Kate won’t be present at the Women’s Singles final on Saturday, July 13, 2024. Instead, Wimbledon chairwoman Debbie Jevans will step in to present the trophy to either Jasmine Paolini or Barbora Krejcikova.

Last year, in 2023, Kate was at Wimbledon with Prince William and their two eldest kids, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, watching Carlos Alcaraz clinch victory against Novak Djokovic. This year, we’ll see the same thrilling matchup in the men’s final, but under some very different circumstances for the Wales family.

There’s been some uncertainty about whether Kate would be able to fulfill her traditional role of presenting the trophies this year. Back in June 2024, All England Club chair Jevans told Telegraph Sport that the tournament was prepared to be flexible with the princess. “We’re hopeful that the Princess of Wales will be able to present the trophies as the Club’s patron, but her health and recovery is the priority,” Jevans said in a piece published on June 27. She added, “We don’t know what we don’t know. All we’ve said is that we’ll work with her and give her as much flexibility as possible.”

At the time, the Telegraph Sport reported that the final decision might not be made until the morning of the match, highlighting just how carefully Kate’s team is managing her public appearances during her treatment.

Speaking of her health journey, Kate opened up about her diagnosis in a video shared on March 22, 2024. She has previously undergone a planned abdominal surgery in January 2024, and tests after the operation found that “cancer had been present.” Since then, she’s been undergoing what she described as “a course of preventative chemotherapy.”

Just last month, in June 2024, Kate gave us another update, sharing a new photo and some insight into her ongoing treatment. She said, “I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days.” She added, “On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.”

It seems like Wimbledon might just be one of those good days Kate’s been talking about. Her appearance at the tournament is not just a chance for her to enjoy some world-class tennis—it’s also a powerful statement for how she’s faring as she continues her recovery. As we look forward to seeing Kate back in the royal box, it’s clear that her spirit remains as unbreakable as ever, whether she’s presenting trophies or simply enjoying the match.
