Euro 2024 final score: England vs. Spain result as Mikel Oyarzabal breaks Three Lions hearts to seal record fourth title for La Roja

Mikel Oyarzabal snatched Euro 2024 glory for Spain as the substitute's late winner secured a 2-1 win over England in Berlin.

Luis de le Fuente's team are unquestionably richly deserving champions after making it seven wins out of seven in Germany, although they were made to toil by a disciplined England defensive effort during a tense and goalless first half.

Despite losing talismanic midfielder Rodri to injury at the interval, the game was broken open within two minutes of the restart as Lamine Yamal finally got some change out of Luke Shaw, Kyle Walker was drawn towards the ball and Nico Williams had space to gleefully rifle home.

England struggled in the immediate aftermath of going behind, with the tournament's joint-top scorer Dani Olmo going close. Jordan Pickford then saved brilliantly from Lamine Yamal.

By the time England's No. 1 denied the Barcelona teenager again, his team were level. Cole Palmer was introduced in the 70th minute and brilliantly dispatched Jude Bellingham's layoff three minutes later.

As they did when they went behind against France in the semifinal, Spain responded to conceding with supreme composure. Instead of being able to push for the winner, England were driven back and a tiring defence was unpicked decisively as Real Sociedad star Oyarzabal converted Marc Cucurella's low cross to win a record fourth European title for his country and change his life forever.

Olmo cleared Declan Race's late header off the line and, after a bitter repeat dose of the heartbreak his players suffered in the Euro 2020 final against Italy, Gareth Southgate might walk away. If he does, the England manager will do so as the most successful coach of his national team since World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey. Three semifinals in six years have elevated England to the top table; the final step remains tantalisingly out of reach.

We're about to get underway and there's huge news from Berlin. Rodri is coming off injured and will be replaced by Martin Zubimendi . Huge blow for Spain. Morata restarts.

Halftime

Goalless at the break and it's been cagey and cautious. England have stood up well defensively to a Spain team who have been typically smooth in possession. La Roja's ravenous press has led to problems in possession for the Three Lions, who have been restricted to 30% of the ball. They've still probably been about as threatening as Luis de la Fuente's side, mind. Gareth Southgate's use of his bench has been crucial to his team's progress in this tournament and it will be again as the 11 out there right now are getting through a lot of work.

45+1 mins : Shaw's delivery floats over the masses and a stretching Foden makes solid contact on the volley. It's too close to Simon to trouble the Spain goalkeeper.

45 mins : Bellingham to Kane, whose shot is smothered by a flurry of red shirts. Rodri with the decisive block. Walker gets to the second ball and a panicked Williams gives England a free-kick in a handy position on the right flank. There'll be a delay because Laporte hurt himself in that Kane snafu.

43 mins : Stones back in his natural habitat combines with Walker to deny Morata. Another corner for England to deal with and they do.

40 mins : Stones thinks "stuff this, I'll do it myself" and embarks up a Beckenbaueresque surge up the field. He can't find the pass to Kane and Spain are unable to capitalise on the Manchester City man being upfield.

39 mins : Now Ruiz balloons a cross out of play. England rewarded for their disciplined defensive shape, but they need some time in possession because this is becoming hard work. Pickford and his defenders attempt to play through the Spain press with mixed results.

36 mins : Williams with Walker in close attendance. He boots an aimless cross out for a goalkick.

34 mins : Lamine Yamal has his latest dart at Shaw. The England man comes out on top again but it is a Spain corner. Nice delivery from the Barca teenager. Deflected behind for another. Laporte complaints to the referee about Rice having a hold of him. One to keep an eye on.

25 mins : Carvajal with a needlessly rash dive in on Shaw, who goes barrelling into the box. It won't break for Bellingham and Spain hack clear. Talking of rash, Kane takes a heavy touch, stretches into Ruiz and becomes the first man booked this evening.

24 mins : Rodri hustles Foden into an error. Lamine Yamal has a shooting chance. Guehi blocks behind. England unfussily deal with the corner.

19 mins : Lamine Yamal might be starting to think someone bought him Shaw as a birthday present. Again the Manchester United man barges the teenager out of the way on the edge of the area.

17 mins : Lamine Yamal flies into a block as Rice lines one up on the edge of the box. Shaw picks up the pieces and Cucurella clears his cross. England's best spell.

16 mins : Foden's corner is flat and really quite rubbish. Easily cleared.

15 mins : Foden received a throw and Bellingham finds room to move in-field. Saka finds Walker tearing outside him and it's a corner.

13 mins : Nice deep corner from Williams, Rodri heads back across goal and Le Normand flicks an overhead attempt wide.

12 mins : Williams against Stones, mano e mano stuff. Stones shows the Spain winger outside and then crunches into a challenge to prevent the shot. In more concerning news for the England defence, Walker is hobbling after a challenge on Ruiz.

11 mins : Shaw with a chance to swing a free-kick in from deep on the left after Rodri fouls Bellingham. Stones wins the header but Guehi has fouled Laporte.

8 mins : Neat interplay between Williams and Ruiz. Walker and then rice with the last-ditch work for England. All Spain so far.

5 mins : England clear at the near post. Saka plays into Spain territory and England cede possession again. Morata is coming deep effectively to even up the midfield numbers.

8 mins before kickoff : England's players enter the tunnel at the Olympiastadion. Spain were already there. Captains Kane and Morata share a warm embrace And here's Italy great Giorgio Chiellini handing over the Henri Delauney trophy.

15 mins before kickoff : Rodri is likely to have a key influence over the outcome of today's game. Put simply, the Manchester City and Spain midfielder doesn't tend to lose football games. He's been imperious throughout Euro 2024, leading to growing calls for the 28-year-old to win the Ballon d'Or. However, England's switch to a four-man midfield could leave Spain outnumbered in the engine room. In Southgate's midfield "box" lurk Phil Foden, who knows his club colleague inside out and Kobbie Mainoo. The Manchester United midfielder played in the only team to beat Rodri for club or country this season when he scored in May's FA Cup final win.

30 mins before kickoff : England's senior men's team are trying to win their first major honour on foreign soil tonight. However, their age group sides have had some very relevant success in that regard. Phil Foden scored twice when England beat Spain 5-2 to lift the U17 World Cup in 2017. Marc Guehi also started for England that night and Conor Gallagher came off the bench. Then, last year, England U21s beat Spain 1-0 to become European Champions with the help of Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon. Palmer irritated his opponents so much that night he has become the focus of a revenge mission in some sections of the Spanish media.

1 hr 10 mins before kickoff : CONFIRMED TEAM NEWS. S haw starts for England, the man who opened the scoring in the second minute of the final three years ago is back in the final and up against Lamine Yamal a day after the winger's 17th birthday. Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand return from suspension to take their places in Spain's back four as expected.

1 hr 20 mins before kickoff : Confirmed team news will be with us shortly and there's only really one talking point across two very settled sides. Luke Shaw has been tipped to make his first start of the tournament ahead of Kieran Trippier at left-wingback for England. The Manchester United player came into the competition nursing an injury but he has impressed by lending much-missed balance to the England side in extended substitute outings against Switzerland and the Netherlands. On the other hand, Shaw would be making his first start in any competitive football since February manning the same flank as Spain sensation Lamine Yamal. A gamble, for sure, but one worth taking with everything on the line.

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff : For the most recent major tournament meeting between England and Spain, you have to go all the way back to the quarterfinals of Euro 96. It's a game that's best remembered for Stuart Pearce slaying his 1990 World Cup demons when he scored in England's shootout win after a tense 0-0 draw. Well, apart from in Spain. There the match is remembered as a robbery on account of Julio Salinas and Kiko having goals incorrectly ruled out and Alfonso Perez having a clear penalty shout against Paul Gascoigne waved away.

2 hours before kickoff : England won the previous competitive meeting between these sides when Southgate’s men claimed a swashbuckling 3-2 win in Seville. Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford were on target that night, two support attackers who suited Harry Kane’s natural game to a greater extent than the current configuration. The Bayern Munich star has looked short of form and fitness during this competition but his nerveless penalty against the Netherlands made him joint top scorer with three goals. Kane could walk away with another golden boot and the first major honour of his prolific career later and we’d all wonder what all the fuss was about.

2 hrs 20 mins before kickoff : England’s form in Germany could hardly contrast more sharply with that of their opponents tonight. After an impressive first half hour, the opening win over Serbia became a slog and they stayed in that mode for the next three games. Gareth Southgate’s team lacked balance, cutting edge and inspiration. They were seconds from going out until Jude Bellingham’s overhead kick deep into stoppage time forced an extra half-hour against Slovakia. That was the first of England's showreel tournament moments. The second came when they scored five out of five penalties to defeat Switzerland in a shootout before Ollie Watkins’ winning goal for the ages in the semifinal against the Netherlands. “Moments” are a thing for media types to obsess over. Of greater concern to Spain will be the evidence seen that arguably versus Switzerland and definitely against the Netherlands that a talented England side have started to… whisper it… play quite well.

There’s no doubt whatsoever that Luis de la Fuente’s men have been the most impressive team in Germany. They have won all six of their matches. Only Brazil’s 2002 World Cup winners have claimed victory in every match of a seven-team international tournament before. Morata was wincing as he made his way off the pitch, raising doubts about his availability for Sunday's final, but De la Fuente's faith that his captain would recover in time proved well-placed.
