Former NFL wide receiver and return specialist Jacoby Jones died suddenly in his sleep on July 14. He  was 40 years old.

Jones played nine seasons in the NFL with Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens Pittsburgh Steelers, and then-San Diego Chargers. After a stint with the National Arena League, Jones re-signed with Baltimore in 2017 in order to retire as a Raven. Jones' cause of the death was not immediately revealed.

Scoping out the Alabama State alum's Instagram page, his final post before death left fans emotional.

In a shared post with the NFL and Ravens, they celebrated Jones' record-breaking Super Bowl XLVII performance against the San Francisco 49ers. The former third-round pick from the 2007 NFL Draft opened the second half by returning a kickoff for a 108-yard touchdown -- which stands as the longest scoring play in Super Bowl history.

During the Ravens' 34-31 win over the 49ers, Jones also became the first player in Super Bowl history to record both a receiving touchdown and a return touchdown.

One fan commented on the post, "💔." Another person wrote, "RIP Legend." As news of Jacoby's death traveled, former teammates, coaches, and colleagues filled social media with tributes to the former NFL star.

Former Texans defensive end J.J. Watt posted , "Jacoby was one of the most fun-loving teammates and people I’ve ever been around. Always dancing and laughing, with a permanent smile on his face. Gone far, far too soon. R.I.P Jacoby Jones."

Former Texans running back Arian Foster wrote , "don’t think there’s anyone i ever played with that believed in me like he did. i loved that dude like we came from the same mother. i made sure i told him every time i saw him. and he did the same. one of the purest people i’ve ever been around. damn this [s***] really hurts."
